Alarmed and An Ask
To the Editor,
The Boston Planning and Development Agency have big plans for the Charlestown community, announcing in 2023 that the population of Charlestown will increase over the next 30 years by 80%. That would make over 36,000 people living in our one square mile.
This is alarming as the vacant land of about 100 acres or so is currently and quietly being built out and up with over 40 plus buildings and towers on the drawing board.
The only place that will be left to build is upwards, meaning more towers.
Can the BPDA come to Charlestown and share their special building plans with the residents? The residents pay taxes. You, the BPDA are the recipients of salaries /paychecks and should be accountable to the tax- payer. You owe us the courtesy to share your plans with us.
Why is it that many in Charlestown have no idea what’s currently being built and where? Why the reluctance to face the community in person with plans that affect our lives? Please help us understand this persistence in avoiding direct and informative dialogue with this community.
Stop the Zoom meetings, the canceled chat, the evasiveness and share what the BPDA has planned for this one square mile of 20,000 people soon to be 32,000 and yet, an alarming future 36,000 residents.
Our ASK is that the BPDA come to Charlestown, answer our inquires, and most importantly, inform the community what our future landscape will look like. That is a simple ASK.
Thank you,
Ann Kelleher
