District Crime Shows Increase

The pre-summer months have seen a 7–percent spike in violent and property crimes in Area A-1, compared with last year, according to Boston Police.

Between Jan. 1 and May 28 of this year, 1,104 incidents of Part One crime were reported in Area A-1, which includes Beacon Hill, Charlestown, Chinatown and downtown, as opposed to 1,030 in the same timeframe in 2011.

While the rate of homicides remained the same, with one incident each year to date, rapes and attempted rapes saw an approximately 40-percent increase as the number of incidents rose to seven from five last year.

Larcenies and attempted larcenies were up 10 percent as the number of incidents climbed to 825 from 748 in 2011.

Vehicle thefts and attempted vehicles thefts saw a 5-percent increase as the number of incidents went to 39 from 37 last year.

Robberies and attempted robberies were up 3 percent as the number of incidents rose to 70 from 68 in 2011.

The number of aggravated assaults remained constant, with 90 incidents recorded both years.

In contrast, burglaries and attempted burglaries were down 11 percent as the number of incidents dropped to 72 from 81 last year.

Citywide, Part One crime was down 8 percent as the number of incidents dropped to 8,294 from 8,998 in 2011.
