Youth Hockey Update – Season Winding Down

The season is winding down for the Charlestown Youth Hockey Association (CYHA) this month, with the rink slated to close in mid-March and games likely finishing in early April. This year, five teams in the CYHA will pursue a championship at the State Tournament. In the meantime, the hunt for a league title is still on.

Bantams – Ryan Hodkins wore the hat and had two assists and Charlie Maynard pitched a shutout in Charlestown’s 6-0 victory over Cambridge on Feb. 15.That was followed up by a 6-3 win over the Jr. Railers on Feb. 21. However, in a whirlwind weekend, the team lost by forfeit on Feb. 22 and then lost 10-1 to the Jr. Railers in Malden. They face Lexington/Bedford on home ice March 7 at 2:10 p.m., then a tilt at Hyde Park on March 8. The last game of the year comes against Cambridge on March 15. They are in fourth place at 11-10-3.

Pee Wee A – Lucas Wheeler wore a natural hat and added an assist and Amaya Gosselin scored twice in Charlestown’s 8-2 victory over the Revs on Feb. 14. That win ignited a six-game winning streak that saw them beat Watertown, Lexington/Bedford, Parkway, and Waltham. They face the Revs at Fessenden on March 7, and Waltham on March 8. They are now in first place in their division at 18-6-1. It is statistically impossible for any of the other teams in the division to overtake them.

Squirt 3 – Underwood’s second goal of the game, with 6:38 left, gave Woburn a 2-2 tie with Charlestown, No. 47 with assists on both goals for Charlestown on Feb. 16. They followed that with a loss to Agawam on Feb. 17, 0-3. Since that time, they have gone 2-1. They will face Lynnfield-Saugus on March 8. They are tied for third place at 16-8-2.

Squirt 2 – The 2s have jumped up to third place in their division at 19-5-2 and well within reach of first place. They will face first place Lexington-Bedford this weekend.

Squirt 1 – The top Squirt team has hit a skid and now sits at 10-12-3 after a hot start earlier in the year. The team has hit a hot streak lately though, beating Arlington 2-1 and SMS 4-2 on Feb. 22 and March 1. They have two more contests coming over the next two weeks.

U14 – The older girls are 17-1-3 with a tie against Needham 1-1 at home on Feb. 29. They are in second place behind Brookline.

U12 – The U12s have only one more game in league play until they take a trip to the State Tournament. They beat Westwood 5-0 on Monday, Feb. 24. Kate Frawley with a goal and assist. After relinquishing a three goal lead in the 3rd period, Anna Corcoran scored with 27 seconds left to pull out a 4-4 tie vs. Winchester on Feb. 29. They remain in first place over Natick.

U12B/U10 – The young girls took a hard loss to Masco on Saturday afternoon in Essex Arena, 5-2. The game was over right off the bat as Masco hit two quick goals. However, the girls fought hard and kept them off the board for a bit. In the third period, Ryleigh Jones hit for two goals.
