TOWNIES IN BABE RUTH TOURNEY
Charlestown hosts Somerville at Ryan Playground (the “Neck”) in the opening round of the District 3 Babe Ruth Tournament on Friday, June 23 at 7:30 p.m. The game features some of Charlestown’s best 13-15 year-old baseball players in what is their inaugural season in Babe Ruth. The double-elimination tourney serves as a prelude to the summer league program which begins after the conclusion of the tournament.
CHARLESTOWN GIRLS SOFTBALL
The Charlestown Girls Softball 14U team is on a tear, going 11-0 in the regular spring season, and winning their playoff game in a Monday-Tuesday continuation against the Malden Red Dragons. It was a thriller to see, according to Coach Jack Schievink. On Monday, the talented girls team took the field against Malden and got two innings in before rain storms postponed the game. On Tuesday night, they finished the contest in a nail biter, 12-11.
The girls played it close all game, and in the bottom of the seventh inning, Caroline Conroy hit a single and drove in two runs to tie the game. Then came Grace Tinlin, who took the plate with confidence. Tinnily singled and drove in the winning run, propelling the girls to their second playoff game.
That game was to take place Wednesday night, June 21, too late for the paper’s deadlines. Look for a follow-up next week as Charlestown seeks a championship.
