Continuing through late August, the section of I-93 South between Exit 30 (Route 38) in Somerville and a point south of Exit 26 (Leverett Circle) just north of the Zakim Bridge in Boston will undergo pavement milling and resurfacing improvements.
The work will take place nightly between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. The end time work hours may be extended on Saturday and Sunday mornings based on traffic conditions. The work is weather dependent and is subject to cancellation on a nightly basis.
In an effort to minimize traffic impacts, the work will proceed in phases with short segments of the roadway/bridge surface being milled and then resurfaced.
While the work is being performed, there will be lane closures on I-93 South; including periods where individual on and off ramps will be closed.
Signs, pavement markings and channelizing devices will be used to guide drivers through the work zone.
A significant portion of the project will take place on an elevated section of I-93, which will impact travel speeds. MassDOT encourages drivers to reduce speed and use caution while approaching and traveling through the work zone and to allow for extra time for travel through this area during all periods of the day.
The work is part of an $18 million project to rehabilitate this section of I-93.
