This past weekend State Representative Eugene L. O’Flaherty dropped the puck at the 12th annual Dan McGoff Christmas Classic Hockey Tournament. Shown in the attached photo is O’Flaherty with Charlestown Youth Hockey parents Jim Coviello and Steve Lakus who thanked him for his commitment to the Emmons, Horrigan O’Neil Memorial Rink. Representative O’Flaherty secured earmark funding for rink improvements and after a series of meetings with the Executive Branch, a new energy efficient roof, dehumidifying system, dasher boards, scoreboard and a handicapped mechanical lift have been added to the facility. “I made a commitment to the families of Charlestown that I would advocate for our rink to stay open and affordable for our community. Hockey and skating are very popular pastimes for my constituents and can prove to be too expensive in privatized rinks. The Charlestown rink improvements are something I am very proud to have secured from DCR and will allow our programs to continue producing the excellent skaters our community is known for,” said O’Flaherty.
