Paul Yeramian

Former Charlestown resident

Paul J. Yeramian, a former resident of Charlestown, died September 7 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 64 years old.

Mr. Yeramian was born Dec. 11, 1946 in Somerville, son of the late Joseph and Anna (Stewart) Yeramian. He was a disabled US Army veteran of the Vietnam War who worked as a Booker for Universal Films in Boston for 32 years before retiring. He was an avid reader and enjoyed walking on the beach.

A loving husband, he leaves his wife of 32 years, Geraldine M. (Kearns). He was the beloved father of two sons and a daughter, James M. Whelton and his wife, Eleanor of Dracut, and Patrick J. Whelton and his wife, Reid of York, ME and Maureen E. Whelton of York, ME; devoted brother of Patricia Stefanelli and her husband, Tony of Waltham and Paula Desmond and her husband, Bob of Billerica and proud Papa of five grandchildren Jack, Cole, Emily, Liam and Sean; cherished uncle to several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Lillian Campagna.

Funeral arrangements were by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York, Maine. Burial was in the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Springvale. Rita Graham

Quincy resident

Rita C. (DuMoulin) Graham of Quincy, formerly of Milton, died on September 6. She was 87 years old.

A retired employee of John Hancock Insurance Co. and a former member of the Campion Club of Boston, she was the beloved wife of the late William T.; devoted sister of Jean (DuMoulin) Mullen of Milton; loving aunt of Dianne Barber and Ronald Mullen and is also survived by the Graham family of Charlestown.

Henry ‘Hank’ Purnell

Retired North Reading Police Chief

Henry J. “Hank” Purnell of North Reading, formerly of Charlestown, retired North Reading Police Chief, died at his home surrounded by his family on Sept. 9. He was 69 years old.

A retired 42 year member of the North Reading Police Department, he served as Chief of Police from 1985  to 2007.

He was the beloved husband of 42 years of JoAnna M. (Parsons) Purnell; loving father of Henry Purnell, Jr. and his wife, Pam of Port Richey, FL, Reggie Goulet and his wife, JoAnn of East Hampsted, NH, Debbie Purnell of Port Richey, FL, Tammey Zwicker and her husband, Jeff of Derry, NH, Tina Tryder and her husband, Michael of Tewksbury and Tracey Purnell of North Reading; brother of George Purnell and his wife, Catherine of Charlestown, Michael Purnell of Saratoga, FL, Joan Walters and Ann Phillips of Malden and Gale Steeves and her husband, Richard of Stoughton, the late Billy Purnell and his late wife Elaine and the late Danny Purnell; brother-in-law of John Parsons and his wife, Elaine of Methuen; Marion Fraughton of Seabrook, NH and the late Susan Furbush; grandfather of 10 grandchildren: Tura Purnell, Corena and Danielle Zwicker, Lucas, Emily and Olivia Tryder, Sarah, Derek, Tara and Reginald David Goulet, Jr. He is also survived by four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Rita McCarthy

Retired Legal Secretary

Rita (McFadden)McCarthy of Winthrop, formerly of Charlestown, died Sept. 10 after a long illness. She was 91 years old.

Born in Boston, the daughter of the late Margaret (Porter) and Charles McFadden, she lived in Charlestown prior to moving to Winthrop  60 years ago. Prior to her retirement she was employed as a legal secretary.

She was the beloved wife of the late Thomas McCarthy; devoted mother of Geraldine McCarthy Shore of Swampscott, Mary McCarthy Lane of Tewksbury, Marjorie McCarthy and Thomas McCarthy, both of Winthrop, cherished grandmother and great grandmother of Erin McCarthy, Billy Lane, Kerry Lane, Lauren Prescott, Derek Shore, Max, Elliot, Billie and Fillicity Kane and Madeline Lane; dear sister of Margaret Cunniff of Randolph, Allen McFadden of Chicago and the late John McFadden and Bernard McFadden and sister-in-law of Mary McFadden of Dorchester.
