Irene “Renie” Murphy

Former Mayor of Charlestown, Longtime Owner of Renie’s Subs on Bunker Hill Street

Irene “Renie” Murphy, 79, of Vero Beach, Florida, formerly of Charlestown, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 13 at home after a long battle with cancer. She was surrounded by friends and family according to her wishes.

 Renie was born in Charlestown to Cornelius Murphy and Mary Goggin, and lived most of her life here. She owned Renie’s Subs on Bunker Hill Street for many years which was a hub of the neighborhood and she also worked for the MWRA. Renie was also a former Mayor of Charlestown.

She is survived by her son, C.J. (Murph) Murphy and his partner, Sabra Mitchell, her beloved grandson, Declan Murphy as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was a loving sister to the late James and Dodie Murphy and is also survived by her other brother, Mickey (Irish Mike) Murphy. She is the widow of Richard Penta, formerly of Medford.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday January 23 at Anthony’s of Malden on 105 Canal Street in Malden from 4 to 6 p.m. Buffet and desert provided, cash bar.
