Long-time Townie Sports columnist Kevin Kelly reported to the paper that he is stepping back from his popular column in the newspaper and online for a time. His reporting on local athletes was invaluable and comprehensive. No one knows more about Townie sports than Kevin. He is encouraging everyone to continue posting their athletic accomplishments on the Townie Sports Facebook page, and the Patriot-Bridge will continue picking those up and reporting on them in the paper. See ya’ around Kevin!
Derby Dreams Dashed
Charlestown’s Mark Sullivan reported that his racehorse Bourbon War came in 24th in the field with 31 points, just finishing outside of the mark to be admitted to this weekend’s Kentucky Derby. The point threshold this year was much higher than in previous years, making it a little more difficult to gain entry into the race. Bourbon War was looking good throughout the spring season, but hit a slight bump in finishing 4th at the Florida Derby. Sullivan said they plan to enter the horse in the Preakness or the Belmont Stakes.
Yeah Bruins!!! Yeah Matty “Ice”!!!
Boston Bruin, and Charlestown’s favorite man on the ice, Matt Grzelcyk ended up with four assists and 10 shots on net for the playoff series against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Picking up on that momentum, Grzelcyk scored a power play goal against Columbus on Sunday in the Bruins’ overtime loss. Down 2-1, the team is scheduled to play today, May 2.
