TOWNIE SPORTS 01-17-2019

CYHA UPDATE (as of Dec. 30)
•MITES: The Mite 1 Townies have been on a tear this winter as they sit at 11-2 through Dec. 30 and are in first place with the Waltham Mites 4 closing in…The Mites 2 are holding steady in the middle of the pack at 8-6, in third place…The Mite 3 team is on a three game winning streak under coaches Brian Beisel and Paul Cangiano and are at 8-7. They are fighting for first place with the Brookline Mite 6 team…The Mite 4 team is at 6-8 and in fourth place at the moment, but looking to move past Natick into third place. The playoffs for the Mite leagues start the first weekend in March.
•MIDGETS: The Charlestown Midget 1 team sits firmly in second place at 4-2-1 behind a powerful Lexington/Bedford team. The prospects look good for a run at first place though.
•PEEWEE: The PeeWee AA team is at 6-9-2 at the moment, but crowded in the middle of several teams with similar records. They could move up quick…The PeeWee A team is at 7-8-1 and are in sixth place in a division that boasts 11 teams.
•SQUIRTS: The Squirts AA team are at 6-7-4 and in sixth place. In recent action, Natick edged Charlestown 4-3 – Will Sutton with two goals and Lewis Edwards two assists in the loss…The Squirt A squad is 7-10-1 and in sixth place. In recent action, Murphy scored twice and Collins had a goal and an assist in Charlestown’s 7-1 victory over Framingham. Arlington trimmed Charlestown 9-7 – Brayden Fidler O’Neil with four goals, Tommny Bresler 1-2-3 and McKenna two assists in the loss.
•BANTAMS: The Bantam AA team is in third place at 8-3-4 and fighting to climb the ranks before the playoffs.
•U10 GIRLS: The girls are on an unbelievable tear through their league this season under Coach Melissa Richards, hitting on a seven game winning streak. They are in first place with an 11-1-2 record, in good space ahead of the Natick Comets.
•U12 GIRLS: The U12’s are in fifth place with a 4-6-3 record, and hot on the trail on the Wilmington Lady Wildcats.

COLLEGE WINTER SPORTS
ON THE ICE: Northeastern freshman wing Micaela Sindoris tallied an assist in the Huskies 7-5 setback to BC…Salem St. senior wing Danielle Kelley scored a goal, junior center Rose Sullivan added an assist, and senior standout Jacqueline Sindoris blasted 3 shots on net in the Lady Vikings 2-1 triumph over Salve Regina. In a rematch that resulted in a 3-3 tie, Jacqueline Sindoris dished out 2 assists and Danielle and Rose combined for 5 shots on net…UMass-Lowell sophomore wing Connor Sodergren contributed an assist and bombed 3 shots on net in the River Hawks 3-0 blanking of Colgate. In a rematch 4-1 win, Connor added another assist…Amherst freshman wing Sean Wrenn rifled 5 shots on net in the Mammoths 4-2 victory over Connecticut College.

HIGH SCHOOL WINTER SPORTS
•ON THE ICE: Groton sophomore wing Ronan Doherty tallied a goal and an assist in a 4-2 triumph over Hebron. Ronan added another goal in a 3-0 punchout of St. George…Archbishop Williams junior forward Brody Tuite dished out an assist in a 11-0 pummeling of Matignon…Boston Latin senior backliner Matt Coviello notched an assist in the Wolfpack’s 7-3 drubbing of Concord-Carlisle…Reading senior wing Abbie Collins contributed an assist as the Lady Rockets dropkicked Belmont to the tune of 7-1…Wakefield freshman wing Michael Locke rifled home a goal in a 4-1 setback to Winchester. Michael added an assist in a 3-1 victory over Wilmington.

•HOOP: Pope John XXIII senior co-captain Conor Kelly tossed in 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to help Coach Leo Boucher and the Tigers dismantle Maimonides to the tune of 65-47. Conor added 15 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks in an 83-31 torching of St. Joseph Prep…Braintree senior sensation Adriana Timberlake drilled home 23 points and grabbed 8 rebounds as the Wamps outlasted Needham by a score of 56-43.

CHARLESTOWN YOUTH BASKETBALL
•Thursday, Jan. 17 – Rockets vs. Warriors, 6:30 p.m., Community Center; Sonics vs. Clippers, 7:15 p.m. Harvard-Kent; Phoenix Mercury vs. Connecticut Suns, 7:15 p.m. at Edwards Middle; Wizards vs. Spurs, 7:30 p.m. at Community Center 2; Pacers vs. Hornets, 7:30 p.m. at Community Center 1; Celtics vs. Mavericks, 8:15 p.m. at Harvard-Kent.

•Tuesday, Jan. 22 – Hornets vs. Wizards, 6:30 p.m. at Community Center 2; Celtics vs. Sonics, 7:45 p.m. at Community Center

YOUTH HOCKEY DISTRICTS
Districts 1 Playoffs will be held week of January 21. There are no Mass Hockey Districts for Mites – this is for Squirts/U10 and up. This is a single elimination tournament with the winner advancing to the State Tournament in March. There will, for most teams, be games on Monday Jan. 21 (MLK Day). There could also be games Tuesday through Thursday in the evening.
