Third Annual Flag Disposal Ceremony on June 14

The James W. Conway Bunker Hill Post #26 American Legion, The Abraham Lincoln Post #11 and The Charlestown Militia Company, Gardner’s Regiment, along with the Charlestown High School ROTC Cadets and Bugler John Collins, (Ret) United States Air force will host the 3rd Annual Flag disposal ceremony at the Charlestown Training Field.

The ceremony will commence on Flag Day, June 14, 2012 at 1800 hours. (6 p.m.)  This is one of only two days each year that an American flag can properly be disposed of. (The other day is Veteran’s Day).

The ceremony will begin with a color guard and military procession onto the Training Field Green, the playing of our National Anthem, pledge of allegiance and singing of patriotic songs.  Three ceremonial flags will be presented to the Commander of the American Legion Post to be deemed “No longer serviceable”, at which time Legion Chaplain, Rev. Daniel Mahoney will bless the flags and they will be ceremonially retired by fire.

Any and all are welcome to attend this patriotic and inspiring event. Please bring your non serviceable flags to retirement.  You may also bring your flags, in advance, to The Cooperative Bank at 201 Main St. for disposal up to June 13, 2012. Please note there will be NO rain day. For further information, please contact: Bill Boyle, event chairman (617) 242-2391 or  Tom Coots, vice chairman (617) 242-0380
