  • TOWNIES MAUL TIGERS

In a highly entertaining game of ebbs and flows, Charlestown outlasted Pope John XXIII 29-20 in a Friday night (Sept. 15) gridiron matchup at Firefighters Field in Charlestown. The Townies (1-0) jumped out to a 15-0 halftime lead before the Tigers (0-2) stormed back with 20 unanswered points in the second half. C-Town responded with two late-game TDs to seal the triumph for third-year coach Dave Cahill. First year PJ coach Craig Connors has to like the grit his players displayed in what could turn out to be a heckuva rivalry.

  • ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT…

Sophomore Halle Alitz of the University of Miami was an impact performer as a freshman on the varsity rowing team. The Charlestown native, a Warren Prescott School and Boston Latin graduate, helped the Canes go undefeated at the Knecht Cup and earn ACC Crew of the Week honors for their performance. She was also part of the Varsity Eight boat that won the Petite Final at the 2017 ACC Championships and earned a pair of wins at the Sunshine State Cup. Halle, an ACC All Scholastic selection, has earned President’s Honor Roll, Provost’s Honor Roll, Dean’s List and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

  • TIGERS CLAW CRISTO REY

In soccer action, junior captain Conor Kelly led a solid defensive effort with nifty dribbling and crisp breakout passes to lead Pope John XXIII to a 5-0 drubbing of Cristo Rey last weekend. The triumph evened the Tigers record at 2-2 (2-1 in the Catholic Central League).

  • WOLVERINES NOTCH WIN

On the gridiron, linebacker/slot receiver Eddie Sullivan notched 4 solo tackles as Bridgton Academy waylaid Nichols JV to the tune of 47-7.

In cross country action, All Scholastic senior captain Liam Nolan helped Hingham topple league rival Plymouth South by 32 points with a 3rd place 5K time of 17:20…On the soccer field, Boston Latin senior goaltender Jack Evans has allowed only three goals in four games to help the Wolfpack (3-0-1) remain undefeated…North Reading senior attacker Karlie Vesey has notched 2 goals and an assist to help the Hornets jump out to a 2-1-0 start in the Cape Ann League…In a battle of “Townie” coaches on the gridiron, Dave Cahill’s Charlestown squad opened their season with a highly entertaining 29-20 victory over Craig Connors Pope John XXIII Tigers. PJ’s staff also includes Nick Codair, Paul Blaikie and Joe Codair.

  • PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Steven Williams (Charlestown High) The junior QB led the Townies to an exciting 29-20 victory over Pope John XXIII with both his arm and legs. Steven threw for a touchdown, ran for another score, tossed a 2-point conversion and kicked an extra point.

  • 2017 Little League Banquet!
    Thursday, October 26, 6-8 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Medford St. Rookie, AAA, and Major league players and family are invited to attend this awards dinner. Pizza, soft drinks and desserts will be served.
  • The Third Annual Ryan ‘Duce’ Morrissey Cornhole Tournament will take place on Oct. 8, 9:30 to 11 a.m., at the Knights of Columbus Hall. The entry fee is $50 per team and proceeds go to the scholarship fund.
  • The Abraham Lincoln Post 11 GAR will hold its annual 50/50 fundraiser on Nov. 15 at 8:30 p.m. in the Warren Tavern. Only 200 tickets will be sold and the winner takes home $5,000.
