CYHA Update

•McGonagle/McGoff Memorial Tournament – The Charlestown Youth Hockey Association (CYHA) and the McGonagle and McGoff families staged another brilliant tournament last weekend.

In the girls U14 McGoff division, the Townie team fought hard, but Mass Bay and Belmont prevailed to fight it out in the championship game. Mass Bay won the title 1-0 in overtime.

The Pee Wee McGonagle Division saw Wellesley take the cake with a 2-0 win over Belmont in the championship.

The Mite Division, on Sunday, was where the action was at as the Charlestown Mite 1 team did battle with Needham in the Considine Division. First, in the final game of the tournament, Charlestown played brilliant and defeated Needham. That set up a championship game directly after between the two foes. It was a battle to the end and one for the ages. The action was relentless, but at the end of regulation, it was a tie. That tie prevailed through one intense session of overtime. Then came sudden death overtime. Both teams had near wins with a barrage of shots on goal. However, at about the two-minute mark into the second overtime, Needham slipped a wrist shot above the right shoulder of the Townie goalie. A tough loss for Mite 1, but few teams have fought harder for the title that those two teams.

•This weekend, several teams are looking towards the playoff semi-finals and championships in the Valley League. The girls teams still have another week to go until their post season play starts. This Saturday and Sunday will be busy for the Townies. The playoff games are as follows:

Pope John Punch Ticket to North Finals

Coach Leo Boucher utilized a trapping PJ defense to stifle the Fenway attack before the Tigers extended a second half lead with a plethora of 3-pointers.
