Charlestown Remains Blue as Voters Back Markey

Charlestown voters didn’t turn out in huge numbers to support Congressman Ed Markey during the U.S. Senate Primary and handed a Charlestown victory to Congressman Stephen Lynch.

However, Charlestown Democrats threw their support behind Markey during Tuesday’s General Election.

Markey, who won statewide and beat Republican challenger Gabriel Gomez to take John Kerry’s vacant seat, easily carried the Town and Boston on his way to election victory Tuesday night.

In Charlestown Markey got 1,912 votes to Gomez’s 1,189. In Boston Markey cruised to an easy victory getting 76% of the vote to Gomez’s 23%. Unofficial citywide totals had Markey getting 70,086 votes to Gomez’s 21,437 votes.

Statewide Markey beat Gomez 55% to 45%. The statewide vote totals were 642,288 votes for Markey and 525,080 votes for Gomez.
