Capt. John ‘Jack’ Rooney

USAF (Retired)

Capt, John T. “Jack” Rooney, USAF (Retired) of Centerville entered into rest on Monday, December 10. He was 77 years old.

“Jack” was born on March 11, 1935 in Charlestown, to the late John T. Rooney and Teresa Collins Pollack.  He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps for four years and went on to join the United States Air Force from which he retired as Captain in Warner Robins.  He was of the Catholic faith.

In addition to his parents, his beloved stepfather who raised him, Philip Pollack, preceded him in death.

His memory will forever be treasured by his loving wife, Sharon Odom Rooney of Centerville; sons, John Rooney of Atlanta, Georgia and Paul Mercer (Jessica) of Warner Robins; grandchildren, Stephanie Rooney, Arlington, Virginia, and Brennan and Brandon Mercer, both of Warner Robins; siblings, Robert Rooney, Charlestown, Massachusetts, Philip Pollack (Rosa), Sugarland, Texas, Eleanor Santosuosso, Charlestown and William Pollack, Stoneham and his brothers-in-law, Charles Odom, Warner Robins and Stan Odom (Annquinette), Eatonton, Georgia.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 11 in Andersonville National Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests donations be made to the COPD Foundation, 2937 SW 27th Ave, Suite 302, Miami, FL, 33133.

Rita Murphy

Retired First National Stores Secretary

Rita M. Murphy of Winthrop passed away at the Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home on January 4. She was 99 years old.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed at First National Stores as a secretary.

Born in Charlestown, she was the beloved daughter of the late William and Agnes (Gallagher) Murphy; loving sister of the late Mae Selvitelli, Helene, Teresa, Joseph, Veronica and Francis Murphy; dear aunt of William and Marie Murphy of Novi, MI, David and Deborah Murphy of West Palm Beach FL, Janet McLaughlin and Paula and John Lombardi of Franklin, Robert and Patricia Selvitelli of Sutton, Richard Murphy of Winthrop, Barbara and William McNeil of Milton, Kathleen and George Moynihan of West Newbury and the late William Selvitelli.

Funeral arrangements were by the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, Winthrop. A Funeral Mass was held in St. John the Evangelist Church, Winthrop on January 9. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
