Boston City Councilor Gabriela Coletta Zapata (District 1) is calling for a City Council oversight hearing following Boston Public Schools’ (BPS) announcement recommending the closure of Charlestown High School effective June 30, 2028.
The hearing order seeks to examine the district’s decision-making process, the factors contributing to declining enrollment, the potential impacts on students and families, and the long-term future of secondary education in Charlestown.
According to BPS, enrollment at Charlestown High School has declined approximately 32 percent over the past three years, from 820 to 559 students. The Boston School Committee is expected to vote on the recommendation on December 2, 2026.
“This is difficult news for the Charlestown community, especially the students, families, and educators who call this school home,” said Councilor Coletta Zapata. “Before a decision of this magnitude is made, we need a full understanding of the data, the alternatives considered, and what this means for students and families. We also need to ensure the Charlestown community has a meaningful voice in determining what comes next.”
The proposed oversight hearing will examine the district’s enrollment projections and school assignment policies, the educational and financial implications of closure, and the transition plans for current students. Particular attention will be given to multilingual learners, students with disabilities, and families who may face additional transportation or school placement challenges.
The hearing will also explore opportunities to maintain or establish high-quality secondary education in Charlestown, including potential academic partnerships, alternative school models, and the future use of the existing school building.
“Regardless of what comes next, my commitment is to ensure Charlestown has a high school that provides a world-class education, strong academic standards, and the resources every student needs to succeed,” Coletta Zapata continued. “Our students deserve nothing less, and our community deserves to be part of the conversation from the beginning.”
Representatives from BPS, educators, students, families, and community stakeholders will be invited to participate. A hearing date has not yet been scheduled and will be announced once confirmed.
