Memorial Day Events in Charlestown

Hero Square dedication

On Saturday May 23, at 1 p.m. the American Legion JW Conway Post 26 and Abraham Lincoln GAR Post 11 of Charlestown in coordination with the Office of City of Boston Councilor Gabriela  Coletta Zapata will dedicate a “Hero Square” to Pvt William P Nearen. William was a native of Charlestown who joined the British Army during WWI and served with British Kings Liverpool Regiment during the “Great War”. William was killed during the Battle of Somme on August 12th , 1916. The dedication takes place at the corner of Nearen Row and Tremont Street.

Bronze Star Medal ceremony

On Monday May 25, at 1 p.m. a Bronze Star Medal will be awarded posthumously by the U.S. Army to Pvt. Thomas J. Flynn, a native of Charlestown, who was killed in Germany on Nov 19, 1944, during WWII. The event is sponsored by the Charlestown Veterans History Project, American Legion JW Conway Post 26 and Abraham Lincoln GAR Post 11 of Charlestown. The ceremony takes place at the Boston Firefighter Engine 50 House located at 34 Winthrop Steet in Charlestown.
