Proud of Charlestown
To the Editor:
I am grateful to live in historic Charlestown where we are reminded of our American history in a daily gaze at the Bunker Hill Monument, or a glimpse or full view of the magnificent USS Constitution. We also enjoy the celebration of historic events.
On a glorious clear blue sky day, in the Charlestown Navy Yard, the United States Navy commissioned the newest, most technologically advanced ship to the fleet, the US Nantucket, “The Gray Lady of the Sea.” The ceremony was next to the USS Constitution, our oldest ship, stern to stern with our newest, with pennants waving in colorful celebration.
The two Commanding Officers, Captain Crystal Schaefer of the USS Constitution and Commanding Officer Kari Yakubisin of the US Nantucket command two of America’s finest vessels.
Governor Maura Healey proclaimed the profound experience of being able to view the Bunker Hill Monument as the symbol of the first Battle of the American Revolution, the USS Constitution which fought in the War of 1812, and the steel US Nantucket prepared to serve our country, connecting our history.
The US Navy rituals are unrivaled, commencing with the Nantucket Town Crier shouting “Hear ye! Hear ye!” followed by uplifting speeches, ending with the crew bringing the ship to life. Each crew member runs, hand on heart to the ship, followed by crewmates and commanding officers who hold their golden medals to their chests, as they run one by one, to all join at the commissioning, to bring the ship to life. These crew hail from all over the country, on a ship engineered, provisioned, and outfitted by companies in 44 of 50 the United States.
The commitment to our country, to our principles, and to our future brought tears to some, pride to others, and hope for all.
“Fair winds and following seas.”
May we keep our country and our world safe. Bless the US Nantucket on her voyages.
