The Friends of City Square Park works in tandem with the city and other local organizations to participate in other events, such as the annual Paul Revere ride on Patriot’s Day and Art in the Park with local artisans and artists. Photo Exhibit at Stovefactory Gallery

Charlestown photographer Russ Bolt will be exhibiting two of his photography projects at the StoveFactory Gallery beginning with a reception Friday, May 3 from 5-8pm. The exhibit will then be on view Saturdays, May 4 and 11, 11-5 p.m. and Sundays, May 5 and 12, 1-5 p.m. One project is color work of the interior of Fort Warren on Georges Island first hung in the Mayor’s Gallery at City Hall in 2010. The second is in black & white and a recent project of photos taken under I-93 between the Zakim Bridge and Sullivan Square. Balloon release in memory of Steven Jones

On Tuesday, May 7 at 6 p.m. join the family and friends of Steven Jones for a remembrance ceremony and balloon release at Eden Street Park.

Harvest on Vine Food Pantry

This week the Harvest on Vine Food Pantry is requesting macaroni and cheese and breakfast cereal. Any donation of non-perishable foods that you could make would also be greatly appreciated.

Donations can be dropped off at the Food Pantry at 49 Vine St. (Hayes Square), The Cooperative Bank at 201 Main St. and at the Parish Center on 46 Winthrop St. (across from the Training Field).  Financial donations can be sent to: Harvest on Vine, Parish Center, 46 Winthrop St., Charlestown, MA 02129. Turn it Around Tournament and Raffle Tickets

As part of their continuing efforts to create healthy and unifying opportunities for Charlestown youth, Turn It Around Charlestown will host their 5th Annual Turn It Around Basketball Tournament on Saturday, May 4th, 2019,. This tournament is open to all middle and high school aged youth that are residents of Charlestown. In the past, nearly 75 kids participated in the tournament and this year we’re hoping to increase these numbers to well over 100. As part of the event, we are selling raffle tickets for a raffle being held during half time live on our Facebook (Facebook.com/TurnItAroundCharlestown). The raffle tickets are $10.00 each and the prizes include a gift card to Starbucks, local restaurants, a museum membership, the Ultimate Scratch-ticket Board and more! Tickets can be purchased via check or Venmo. Please make checks payable to Charlestown Boys & Girls Club with “Turn It Around 3on3” in memo line and send Venmo payments to Shannon Lundin @Shannon-Lundin-2. City Square Park Summer Concert Series 2019 – free and open to the public!

The Friends of City Square Park are excited to announce the 2019 Summer Concert Series; five evenings of FREE, family-friendly music in the heart of the Park. It’s a wonderful excuse to gather with neighbors and friends, pack a picnic, and enjoy lively music in our historic and bucolic Park. The series is generously sponsored and supported by the Charlestown Mothers Association, Gibson Sotheby’s International Real Estate, Friends of City Square Park, and Rick DuBard’s Foundation.

Rain dates will be for the following day, Thursday.  On Wednesday, May 22, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The Charlestown Boys and Girls Club Performers and the Charlestown High School Band return to the Park and will present a variety of music. Come out to support these incredible kids and young adults! June 12, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. brings The Ghetto People’s Band, making their debut in City Square  with fantastic beats, reggae jams, and a cool vibe. Don’t miss this talent.

July 10, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 pmThe East Coast Soul Band will rock the park again this year with soul, rock and incredible charisma. Last year this was a hit with the little ones and adults alike.

Wednesday, August 14th from 5:30pm to 7:00pm City Square Park’s beloved Dirty Water Brass Band will perform New Orlean’s-style music and crowd favorites. This band never disappoints!

And lastly, on Wednesday, September 11, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00pm Henry Acker, a fourteen-year-old gypsy jazz guitarist with abilities far beyond his years will perform while guests enjoy lawn games and refreshments.

Save the Date! Morrissey Scholarship Awards Night

Friday, May 17, 2019 marks the 5th Annual Friends of Ryan “Duce” Morrissey Scholarship Awards Night.

The fun begins at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Medford St.. There will be dinner, dancing, raffles and fun, as well as the awarding of the scholarship. Tickets are $25 per person, order online at Ryan morrisseyscholarship.com or call Donna 617-763-8527.

2019 / 2020 Registration for Gym Hockey

Registration for the 2019/2020 season is being held on Saturday – May 11, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Mishawum Community Room,

95 Dunstable Street, Charlestown, MA.  There is a registration fee which is not due until September when the season begins. Ages are : 4 years old by October 1 2019 to 9 years old (anyone who turns 10 years old before 2/1/20 is too old. You do not have to live in Charlestown to play.

Harvard-Kent Spring Fundraiser

The Harvard-Kent Parents Association Spring Fundraiser will be held on Friday, May 3, from 5-7 p.m. at The Warren Tavern.  $20 suggested donation at the door and $10 raffle tickets will be sold at the door.  Thank you to the Warren Tavern for donating the space and appetizers.  For more information please email [email protected].

Summer hours begin for USS Constitution

USS Constitution and her crew are scheduled to expand their hours for free public visitation and tours for the summer season, starting April 30. During summer hours of operation, Constitution will be open to the public Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.All guests, age 18 and older, are required to show a valid state or federal photo I.D. or a passport to board the ship.While aboard, guests may walk the ship at their own pace and ask questions to the ship’s active-duty Navy Sailors. In addition to answering guests’ questions, Sailors give presentations on the ship’s history every 30 minutes. All Constitution visitors are encouraged to visit the USS Constitution Museum, also located in the Charlestown Navy Yard and open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The museum features historic artifacts from the Age of Sail and hands-on, interactive exhibits.USS Constitution, the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat, played a crucial role in the Barbary Wars and the War of 1812, actively defending sea lanes from 1797 to 1855.Designated America’s Ship of State, Constitution and her crew engage in community outreach and education about the ship’s history and the importance of naval power to more than 500,000 visitors each year.
