Mary Kate Powers, age 29, of Charlestown is running her first Boston Marathon for Joslin Diabetes Center, a world-renowned diabetes care and research organization in Boston, in honor of her late grandmother, Regina Callahan. Diabetes is a cause close to Mary Kate’s heart as both her grandmother and her cousin have lived with type 1 diabetes, which inspired her to lace up her sneakers for her first marathon this year.
“Before my grandmother passed away, she received her diabetes care at Joslin,” said Mary Kate. “The staff was incredible and the invaluable advice and tools they gave my grandmother enabled her to live a long and healthy life, so I’m proud to run my first marathon on Team Joslin in her honor.”
To train, Mary Kate runs with other Team Joslin members in conjunction with the Heartbreak Hill Running Company on the weekends and uses the encouragement and support of her fellow Joslin runners as motivation to get through the training sessions.
“I’m proud to support Team Joslin as every dollar that I am able to raise through this process counts for something and will ultimately help Joslin continue their tireless work to find a cure for diabetes,” said Mary Kate.
Mary Kate hopes to raise $7,500 for Joslin Diabetes Center; for more information or to donate, please visit: https://www.crowdrise.com/o/en/campaign/joslindiabetescenterboston2018/mary-katepowers
