COUPLA CHARLESTOWN FIRSTS

Congrats to Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk for notching his first NHL goal on Friday in front of the home crowd at the TD Garden – also with his dad, John, watching. He also scored his first point (an assist) in a 3-2 shootout triumph against the New Jersey Devils last week. Also on his first goal against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thanksgiving Day. In ECHL action further south, Jacksonville wing Brendan Collier scored his first goal (he also has six assists) in a 4-3 OT win against the Orlando Solar Bears. GO TOWNIES!!!

 

COACH BOUCHER TO HOLD RAFFLE

Pope John XXIII basketball coach Leo Boucher is holding a $2,500, 50-50 starting lineup raffle drawing for his varsity “hoop” team. Anyone interested in purchasing a ticket ($50) for the Dec. 1 drawing can contact Leo, or call PJ Athletic Director Ryan Murphy at 617-389-0240 ext. 2300.

KUDOS IN LOUISVILLE

The University of Louisville’s Nicole Woods has been named the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association West Region Player of the Year as announced Tuesday, Nov. 28. She becomes the first player in program history to earn the honor.
Woods, a midfielder/forward from Beverly (with big-time Townie roots!) earns the award after collecting her third straight NFHCA All-West Region honor. As a senior co-captain, she tallied 19 points (6G, 7A) while helping Louisville (14-8) reach the finals of the ACC Championship for the first time since joining the league in 2014. The three-time ACC selection is a four-year starter is a three-time All-ACC selection and finishes her career ranked ninth on Louisville’s list for career points (71) and assists (25).
She is also a member of USA Field Hockey’s women’s national team and helped the USWNT capture the 2017 World League title and earn a bronze medal in the Pan American Cups.

 

ANOTHER “TOWNIE” COACH

Reading girls hockey coach Alexa Hingston showcased her decision-making acumen by selecting fellow “Townie” Catherine Taglilatela as an assistant coach. Catherine, a four-year standout goaltender at Arlington Catholic, is a special education teacher at Reading. She received an undergraduate degree in athletic training from Colby-Sawyer College and has a masters in Special Education. Catherine also played club hockey for the Chargers. GO TOWNIES!!!

 

COLLEGE/PRO HOCKEY

Assumption wing Tom Mahoney scored a goal and blasted four shots on net in the Greyhounds 3-1 triumph over Johnson & Wales…Salem St. sophomore wing Rose Sullivan rifled three shots on net and junior wing Jacqueline Sindoris added two more as the Vikings battled UNE to a 1-1 draw.

Jacksonville wing Brendan Collier notched a goal and an assist in the Icemen 4-3 OT victory over the Orlando Solar Bears.
