Senior sensation Ben Speicher led his Trinity College wrestling team to the New England Conference championships. Ben, the team’s captain, was also selected to join the “Teach for America” program in Denver, CO. He is the son of Howie and the late Hoong Wei Speicher, a beloved teacher in the Quincy and Boston Public School systems who passed away (cancer) last year…Congratulations to Marblehead girls assistant swim coach James “Dinga” Houlihan, whose team ended powerhouse Wayland’s five-year reign as Division II state champs. Incredibly, Marblehead accomplished this “David vs. Goliath” feat with only seven swimmers. Another “Townie” swimming legend, Jimmy Kelly, was seen roaming the poolside encouraging several of the swimmers…Whirling dervish Tom DeRosa finished his Tufts University hockey career with an impressive 91 points…Defensewoman Alexa Hingston is also putting the finishing touches on a story-book hockey career. The senior co-captain is currently ninth on St. Anslem’s all-time scoring list with 52 points as her team (19-6-0) enters the ECAC tournament…Forward Patrick Kelly posted 10 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals as St. Joseph of Medford (16-1) clinched a CYO state tourney bid with a heart-pounding 37-33 victory over Immaculate Conception of Revere…The Latin Academy hockey team (12-9-0), led by standout seniors Ryan DeRosa and Michael Clough and up-and-comer Patrick Sullivan, captured the Boston City League title defeating East Boston by a 6-1 score. “Eastie” goalie Sean O’Halloran, as he has done all season, stood on his head making a whopping 44 saves…Third-year coach Edson Cardoso and the Charlestown High School boys hoopsters (20-2, ranked #4) snagged the City of Boston championship with a hard-fought 63-56 win over arch-rival East Boston (15-5, ranked #15)…A tip of the hat also goes out to the State Tournament bound Boston Latin (11-11) and St. Clements (9-9) boys basketball teams. Coach Leo Boucher’s Anchormen, in particular, qualified in dramatic fashion by winning five of their last six games…Time for Malden Catholic (17-1-2, ranked #1) hockey standouts Brendan Collier, Paul Wrenn and Paul Myers to write their “chapter” to the prestigious Super 8 history book.
