The Monument Square Landmark District Study Committee and staff of the Boston Landmarks Commission are pleased to announce the release of a preliminary working draft of a study report on the proposed designation of the Monument Square Landmark District and Protection Area.
This working draft is the first of three drafts that will be released for public comment. This is an extra step voluntarily suggested by the Study Committee beyond what is statutorily required in order to provide the Charlestown community with additional opportunity to provide feedback on the proposal.
Working Study Report: You can find the working study report and feedback form on the project website at www.boston.gov/monumentsquare. Two printed copies will also be available to read at the Charlestown branch of the Boston Public Library. (Please note that this is a draft prepared for informational and public review purposes only, and is not to be used for regulation.)
How To Comment: The Study Committee would like to hear your feedback on the working study report. Please submit comments via the feedback form at www.boston.gov/monumentsquare or by emailing [email protected].

Background on the proposed Monument Square Landmark District
On July 26, 2022, the Boston Landmarks Commission accepted for further study a petition submitted by registered voters to designate the Monument Square Landmark District in Charlestown. The Study Committee is tasked with understanding and documenting the historic, architectural, and archaeological significance of the neighborhood, proposing the district’s boundaries, and crafting recommendations for long-term management of the district that preserve the area’s unique historic character while allowing thoughtful, context-sensitive growth.
