Special to the Patriot-Bridge
In the shadow of the Bunker Hill Monument stands a familiar figure—yet one whose story remains largely untold.
Colonel William Prescott, the man who commanded colonial forces at the Battle of Bunker Hill, is recognized in bronze but often overlooked in history. His leadership helped shape one of the defining early moments of the American Revolution—yet surprisingly little is widely known about the man himself.
Author Donald Ryan set out to change that—not from a distance, but from the very ground where history unfolded.
A lifelong student of history, Ryan began volunteering in 2018 with the National Park Service as a docent at Bunker Hill Monument Park. There, he engaged directly with visitors from across the country and around the world—answering questions, interpreting the battle, and telling the story of Bunker Hill day after day. It was through these conversations that a pattern emerged: countless visitors recognized the monument, but few understood the man it commemorates.
That realization became the catalyst for Ryan’s deeply researched and compelling book, Colonel William Prescott: Heroic Commander of the Battle of Bunker Hill. Tracing Prescott’s life from his birth in 1726 through his death in 1795, Ryan restores dimension and humanity to a figure too often reduced to a name in passing.
What emerges is not only the story of a battlefield commander, but of a principled citizen—rooted in his community, respected by his peers, and driven by a belief in liberty and self-determination. Ryan’s work underscores a powerful truth: pivotal moments in history are shaped not only by sweeping events, but by individuals whose courage and conviction alter the course of those events.
This event offers more than an illustrated talk—it is an opportunity to engage with the human story behind a historic moment. Who was Prescott beyond the battlefield? Why has his legacy faded from public memory? And what can his leadership teach us today?
Attendees will gain a richer understanding of the Battle of Bunker Hill, one of the most consequential early engagements of the American Revolution, and the man who stood at its center. Ryan’s presentation promises to illuminate both the courage and complexity of a leader whose actions helped define a nation’s struggle for independence.
Following the talk, guests are invited to participate in a discussion and book signing—an opportunity to connect directly with the author and further explore this remarkable chapter of American history.
This is a rare chance to look beyond the monument and encounter the man.
