McCarthy Brothers Little League team takes season championship

The McCarthy Brothers and the Boys and Girls Club teams battled it out for the 2016 Charlestown Little League championship just before the All-Star break. The game was a lot closer than the score would indicate. With both teams running lean squads of nine players each, it was back and forth with some very good pitching and great defense, as well as some timely hitting. The final score was 9-3 with McCarthy Brothers coming out the victor.

It was a great game to watch.

Thanks to all the parents who showed up to watch the final game.

Charlestown townies edge past brighton black sox, 5-4

Rightfielder Andy Gonzalez blasted two-run, walk-off double to lead the Charlestown Townies to a come-from-behind 5-4 win over the Brighton Black Sox in Yawkey Baseball League action Friday night at Ryan Park in Charlestown.  The win improved the Townies’ record to 6-15.

Starting pitcher Noah Zavolas, a Harvard student, kept the Black Sox in check after a rocky first inning when he gave up three runs.  The Townies pushed across two runs in the fifth after falling behind 4-0, but the Black Sox lead prevailed headed into the Townie’s last at-bat.  Zavolas led off the Townie’s half of the seventh (final) inning reaching on an error, then scored on JP Bonanca’s double to left to make it 4-3.  Devin Santilli, who started the game at first base then relieved Zavolas in the fifth inning, walked, and that set the stage for Gonzalez’ heroics as he laced a line drive into the left-center gap, scoring Bonanca and Santilli.

The Charlestown Townies are one of 13 greater Boston teams in the competitive wooden-bat league named for former Boston Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey.  The league, which traces its beginning over 50 years ago, flourished starting in 1990 when it commenced its affiliation with the Yawkey family and the philanthropic Yawkey Foundation.  It is the largest amateur baseball program in the Boston area and each team plays a formidable 30-game schedule from May to July with a championship playoff series in August.   For schedules and more information, visit www.yawkeybaseball.com
