Thanks to the Townie Association, what began in 1982 by the “Charlestown to Charlestown” Committee, once again residents have the opportunity to run for “Mayor of Charlestown,” a position with no real or legal responsibilities, but an honorary title. The candidate who sells the most election ballots becomes the Mayor of Charlestown for the year and wins a trip to Ireland. The Mayor will accompany the winner of the Charlestown Rose, who will compete in the Western International Rose Contest in Charlestown, Mayo, Ireland. The tradition of Mayor of Charlestown ended in 1998 with the longest serving Mayor of Charlestown, Debbie Lang.

This year, the Townie Association has revived the beloved tradition.

Mayor of Charlestown. Ballots have been distributed to nominees for the past two weeks and there are reports of several strong campaign organizations forming. “Townies” who have declared their candidacy for this prestigious position include: Shannon Lundin, Beth Cannizzaro Vigilante, Tony V, and Jenae Robinson. Candidates have filled out their applications and are actively selling their votes. This is the only election where nominees can “buy” the election!

Each ballot (vote) can be purchased for $1 each which gives the buyers a chance to win $500 during the Election Drawing. Any name the buyer wishes to buy a vote for is acceptable, they may also do so as many times as they would like. Candidates have until Thursday, June 13th to sell votes. Whoever sells the most votes, wins the honorary title of Mayor of Charlestown and also wins a trip to Ireland for two! The Election Drawing for the 17th Mayor of Charlestown will be held at the Eden Street Park Party on Thursday, June 13th, 2013 at 7:00 PM. Proceeds from the election benefit the Townie Association.
