Doris Umbro
Of Malden, formerly of Charlestown
Doris M. (Spinney) Umbro of Malden, formerly of Charlestown, died in the Melrose – Wakefield Hospital on April 27 after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer with her loving family by her side.
Born on November 7, 1934 in East Boston, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Helen (Duggan) Spinney. She was raised and educated in Charlestown and was a graduate of the Girls’ High School in Boston. She soon went to work with the AT&T Company as a telephone operator in 1956 and was a dedicated employee until her retirement in 1989.
Doris married her sweetheart, Richard P. Umbro in Sacred Hearts Church in Malden on July 3, 1960. The couple moved around briefly after their marriage before settling in Malden to begin their family. Doris and Richard spent almost 52 years in marriage together, raising and caring for their family until her passing.
She was a member of the AT&T Pioneers, an association that helped raise funds for various charities. She was also an avid shopper, most especially in Boston at Filenes and Jordan Marsh.
Mrs. Umbro is survived by her husband, Richard P. Umbro of Malden, her daughter, Lynne Diamond of Malden, her brothers, Roberts Spinney of Malden, William Spinney of Wakefield, and Raymond Spinney of Malden, as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Walsh and Margaret Leonard.
Funeral arrangements were by the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, Malden. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. www.weirfuneralhome.com
