EAGLES LATE SURGE IS “SUPER”

BC High and junior wing Matt Lakus stayed the course when their backs were against the wall and secured their first Super 8 title since 2012 with a memorable late surge to topple a gritty Pope Francis in overtime by a score of 2-1. The Eagles (19-4-1) tallied the tying goal with a minute left in regulation and popped in the game winner after 1 minute and 30 seconds into the extra session. Give Pope Francis credit (21-5-3) for a heroic effort which saw them win four elimination games in a row to get to the championship game.

WAMPS REGAIN CROWN

Junior sensation Adriana Timberlake, who led Braintree with 19 points, broke free for a length-of-court layup with 1.6 seconds left on a nice “Tom Brady” pass from teammate Mackenzie Moore to help the Lady Wamps (23-3) capture their third MIAA Division 1 state title in the last five years. The 59-56 triumph over Springfield Central (21-3) avenges two previous one-sided losses to the Golden Eagles and solidifies a Braintree “hoop” dynasty under the helm of Coach Kristen McDonnell.

HOW DO THEY DO IT?

Hats off to Salem St. sophomore Rose Sullivan and St. Joseph (ME) freshman Patrick Kelly. The “Townie” duo manages to excel in the classroom while participating in two collegiate sports.

Sullivan excels at ice hockey and lacrosse, while Kelly excels in basketball and baseball.

SULLY SINKS MASS MARITIME

Speaking of Salem St. standout sophomore Rose Sullivan, she was a one-woman wrecking crew in leading the Lady Vikings (1-6) to their first victory of the season, an 18-7 pasting of Massachusetts Maritime. A fleet-footed midfielder, Rose was sensational scoring 3 goals, blasting 7 shots on net, fielding 4 ground balls and notching a team-high 4 caused turnovers.

‘CANES CREW CONTINUES TO CLIMB

The Miami rowing team continues to make huge strides with another strong showing in a tri-school (Wisconsin, Miami, Central Florida) competition held at Sarasota FL. As part of the Miami Second Varsity 8 crew, sophomore “Townie” Halle Alitz helped the Hurricanes post a second-place finish with a time of 7:19.48. The ‘Canes return to Sarasota on the weekend of April 6-7th to compete in the Sunshine State Invitational Tournament.

ECHL UPDATE

Manchester wing Mike Doherty tallied a goal and an assist in a pair of Monarch OT triumphs (3-2, 5-4) over the Utah Grizzlies…Jacksonville wing Brendan Collier notched an assist in the Icemen’s 4-1 victory over the Norfolk Admirals. Brendan added another helper in a 5-4 OT win over the Atlanta Gladiators.

WE LOST A GOOD ONE!

Heartfelt condolences to the Greatorex family; Charlestown lost a true “Townie.” Eddie was a Teamster, a family man, and the greatest friend to Little League players this town has ever known

WALTHAM WINS!!!

Waltham junior captain and standout defenseman Mike Burke added his name to the champions list when the Hawks (18-5-2) slugged Marshfield by a score of 4-1 in the Division 1 title game. It was the first championship for Waltham since 2002.
