TOWNIES TAKE OPENER
The Charlestown Babe Ruth 16-18 year-olds kick-started their summer campaign in fine fashion with an impressive 7-1 triumph over Brighton. Southpaw Chris Tucker set the tone with a complete game allowing no earned runs and striking out 10 batters. Offensively, the Townies were led by Patrick Kelly (triple, walk, 2 runs, stolen base), Danny Settipani (3 hits, 2 RBIs), Cam Delvalle (hit, walk, 2 RBIs) and Rory Carrier (hit, run). Defensively, outstanding plays were turned in by left-fielder Delvalle (nifty running catch to snuff out a rally), second baseman Carrier (started 2 double plays), first baseman Jason Smith (excellent stretch catch to save a run) and catcher Mike Ward (two runners thrown out stealing).
MAYOR’S CUP UPDATE AND MORE BASEBALL
•9 year old division:
The Townies had a tough game against the South End, losing 7-2 in the semifinals last weekend. Parkway won the other semifinal game vs. Regan, 9-7, and then beat the South End 4-2 to take the championship. Congrats to the 9 year olds for hanging in there against a very good team. Many thanks to Coaches Greg Poole and Sean Neilon, with assistance from parents Mike Doe and Max Gomez.
•11 year old division:
The Townies won big 8-1 over South Boston. The team will advance to the playoffs and will face Roslindale on Saturday, July 22, at 1:30 p.m. on the Bunker Field in West Roxbury.
•District 9 Tournament:
The 12 year old Townies came up short on Saturday in the District finals vs. Allston-Brighton, losing 8-4. They have lots to be proud of, rallying in the bottom of the 6th inning and never giving up. Many thanks go to Coaches Leo Boucher and John “Cheese” Chisholm as well as to Chris Tucker and Zeus Gambaro for guiding our team to second place.
MORE BASEBALL:
Ryan Field and Charlestown Little League are the host town for the Little League Sectionals tournament, which began Wednesday, July 19, at Ryan field with a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. For those who don’t know, the Little League District tournament that we just held leads to the Sectionals, which leads to the States, then the New England Regionals, and then the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. Our Section 3 tournament will include Allston-Brighton as the winners of our District 9, as well as the winners of District 10 (Wellesley), District 11 (Walpole), and District 12 (Melrose). There will be doubleheaders each night at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and then the top two seeded teams play for the Section championship on Saturday (time TBA). Come to the field to watch some top notch baseball! Maybe one of these teams will be on TV in August in the Little League World Series!
