Townie Tidbits

FOLLOW-UP TO LAST WEEK’S IDEA

I passed my idea about resuscitating Townie Santa back to life with Tommy MacDonald and a few of us will be talking about it real soon. Townie Santa is too good an idea to let go. If I hear anything I will get back to you right here.

THE CHARLESTOWN SIGN FOR AUSTIN STREET IS BACK IN PLACE BUT…

Apparently, someone took that oval Welcome to Charlestown sign that community folk paid to put up at the Gateway to Charlestown on Austin Street. Everyone is glad to see that sign returned by whoever took it. Townies are persistent and you knew the sign would be found. I don’t even care who took it but whoever it was I hope they got many lumps of coal for Christmas.

When I first heard of the missing sign, I thought how does stealing a sign happen and then I thought isn’t the best way to do it in plain view? By the way does anyone out there know where the old Thompson Square Station cast iron fence disappeared to  way back in 1974?

One last thing? Can the group who put the sign up do something about changing one thing that irks me about the sign? Charlestown was not founded in 1629, it was founded in 1628. I ought to know, myself and many other Townies all celebrated the 350th anniversary at the Knights of Columbus in 1978 not 1979.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE COMMUNITY APPRECIATION AWARDS?

Several years ago, I remember the Charlestown Neighborhood Council initiated to an Annual Community Appreciation Awards Dinner honoring those unsung heroes who do good by Charlestown. There were several  categories of awardees. The dinner was well attended and the awards a great idea in making a strong community stronger.

Seems This dinner kind of vanished. What happened? How do we get it going again? We still have unsung heroes out there who believe one does not live in a community but lives for the community and its future. It is also not about living such a place as Charlestown and completely forgetting about the place.  The Charlestown Neighborhood Council, is it in or out on bringing back these annual awards again?
