- Townies fall in mayor’s cup championship
Congratulations to the Charlestown 9-year-old All Stars for advancing to the championship game of the 2016 Mayor’s Cup baseball tournament held at Moakley Park in South Boston. The coaches and players could often be seen practicing at the “Neck” and it is no surprise that their hard work got rewarded. Thank you to the coaches for being role models and to the players for being wonderful ambassadors for Charlestown.
- The Charlestown Babe Ruth team walloped Somerville Monday to the tune of 11-0 to improve their record to 2-3. Pitcher Jared Burhoe was “lights out” on the mound tossing the shutout and allowing only 2 hits while striking out 8 batters. Hitting standouts for the “Townies” included Jason Smith (3 hits, run, 4 RBIs), Gavin Kelly (run, 3 RBIs), Rory Carrier (double, 2 runs), Ryan McGonagle (run, RBI) and Malachy Donovan (2 walks, 2 runs, RBI). Defensively, Smith was sensational making several nifty plays at shortstop while Donovan threw a laser-beam strike to Carrier to nail a runner at the plate.
Last week, Charlestown (1-3) exploded for 12 runs in the 3rd and 4th innings to run away from Somerville (1-3) again by a 14-3 score in Babe Ruth action under the lights at the “Neck.” Hitting stars for the “Townies” included Jason Smith (3 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBIs, 2 stolen bases), Eddie Pistorino (2 hits, 2 RBIs, run), Malachy Donovan (hit, run, walk, RBI, stolen base) and James Hollien (3 runs, 2 walks, hit, 2 stolen bases). Also pitching in with the bats were Jack Adduci (run, walk, 2 RBIs), Ryan McGonagle (2 runs, 2 walks, RBI), Gavin Kelly (2 walks), Joe Bova (walk, run, 2 stolen bases), Oscar Jahn (2 walks, run, RBI) and Aidan Fittz (2 runs, 2 RBIs). On the mound, Smith tossed a gem with a complete-game 3 hitter and 13 strikeouts.
